Men and Women Lost Weight Differently

 

It’s all about hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers of the body that control many aspects of physiology including gender differences and metabolism. Hormones affect everything from how we store and burn fat, to how we process carbohydrates, to our food cravings.

 

In this article we are referring to the normal chemicals produced by the glands of our bodies to send a signal for something to happen. More specifically we are concerned with messages that carry information about how we burn or store fat, build and maintain muscle and desire food.

There are at least 6 key hormones that have a major effect on weight management – testosterone, insulin, cortisol, serotonin, thyroid and estrogen. Here’s a bit about each:

Testosterone: This is the primary male hormone. It helps maintain both muscle and bone mass. Testosterone levels decline with age in men and can make it harder for men to build and maintain muscle.

The key for men is to maximize their testosterone at any age . Exercise, especially resistance training supports healthy testosterone levels – as does fat loss.

Insulin: This hormone is responsible for moving sugars into our cells for use as energy. Insulin is  also described as the gatekeeper that unlocks the door to our cells allowing energy to enter.

Cortisol: This stress hormone is made by the adrenal glands and is released when we are under chronic stress. Cortisol may directly increase appetite and also insulin levels.

Serotonin: While you may know of serotonin as a mood hormone, it is also connected to appetite. Serotonin is made in two primary places -  your brain and your gut. The digestive system will release serotonin in response to carbohydrate foods and this may be why we reach for chips or ice cream and not grilled  chicken when we are under stress.

Thyroid: The thyroid gland is in your neck. The major thyroid hormones are T3 and T4 and they are the prime regulators of metabolism in your body. Optimizing nutrition through diet and supplements can help support your thyroid levels and give you a metabolic edge.

Estrogen: This dominant female hormone is also made by men. In men, estrogen levels climb with age. With declining testosterone levels it can set up a less than optimal balance. Men will also tend to make more estrogen if they have more body fat.
