Let’s not forget our pets during the holidays!
from Well Now Inc.

The holiday season is meant to be a festive and happy occasion for everyone in the family. Take extra precautions during the holiday season to be sure your pets are also safe and healthy!

If you’re a pet lover you may already know that your home, during the holidays, can be a dangerous place.  It never hurts to take a refresher course in safety. Here are some holiday tips:

Holiday Plants: Many popular holiday plants are poisonous to animals including mistletoe, holly, ornamental pepper, Christmas rose and poinsettias. Remember to keep these plants out of reach of pets - especially birds.  Did you know that for humans, poinsettia plants can cause severe reactions among people who have latex allergies?

Save Those Bones For Soup: Do not give bones to your dogs or cats, especially turkey bones. Turkey and chicken bones easily splinter and can cause serious injury, while bone fragments can cause intestinal blockages or lacerations.

Watch Toys: Avoid buying toys with small or soft pieces that can be chewed and swallowed. Nylon bones tend to splinter less than plastic ones.

Animal Treats Only Please! Chocolate and other sweets should not be given to animals. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that can be deadly to cats and dogs. Look for special animal treats to put in their Christmas stocking and keep them on their regular diet!

Say No To Tinsel: If you have a Christmas tree make sure it's well secured. Try to place decorations above paw height and use string to hang the bulbs instead of hooks. If possible, use nonbreakable ornaments. Avoid using tinsel or angel hair. Cats and dogs will eat both, causing intestinal problems. Keep cords for lights out of reach from chewing puppies and exploring kittens. Don't add chemicals to the water base of your Christmas tree - they are toxic to animals. If you must add chemicals to keep your tree living longer, keep the base covered.
