A Call to Balance
Written By Dr. Barbara Smith
The transition from 2006 to 2007 represents a chance to reaffirm
your commitment to your health – physical, mental and
spiritual. The New Year presents an occasion to join the
Wellness Revolution. This revolution grows out of an increasing
acceptance of the connection between the mind, body and spirit;
it is the cornerstone of the chiropractic lifestyle and of
preventative health care. It seeks balance and authentic
wellness.
This wellness attitude is built upon four important concepts:
1. The body has a built in healing
force/intelligence that strives toward balance
2. The body functions as a whole, not as a
collection of individual parts
3. The spine and nervous system play a key role in
health
4. Physical, emotional, environmental and chemical
factors that affect health
We know intuitively that the mind exerts a powerful influence in
determining our reactions to life events. Reflection allows us
to appraise our reactions, to resist negative reactions and to
balance our responses. No one is perfect and learning to
balance is integral to achieving optimal health and inner calm.
A healthy spirit contributes to a healthy body and acknowledging
the innate power of the body can foster a health giving
spirituality. Dr. Chandrakant Shah, of the University of
Toronto advises that “spirituality has been shown to reduce
stress, promote healthy lifestyle choices and increase our
feelings of belonging to a social network – all of which are
associated with lower mortality”
Moreover “spirituality bolsters health by encouraging
forgiveness”. Take the moment to reflect on your relationships.
Are you holding grudges? For whatever reason, relationships fall
off the tracks, but they do not necessarily need to haunt your
health. You can use reflection and a wellness attitude to
improve your health, their health and your relationship, even if
it only means agreeing to move on.
Every individual has the potential for optimal health, the power
and personal responsibility to achieve it. Reflect on your
power and what you want your future to look like – embrace your
power and work to balance your life.
How do you balance your life? Refer to the checklist below. Being
aware is the first and most important step, so pay attention to
your body, mind and spirit. Our office encourages you to go back
to basics; we encourage all our patients to maintain regular
chiropractic adjustments, exercise regularly, eat well, smile
often and stay positive. It really is this simple. Dr. Barbara
Smith gives special attention to the mind, body and spirit
connection and is dedicated to empowering her patients to find
this perspective, to achieve balance and their full health
potential.

the spine that impede health. Equally important they work with
other health professionals to offer their patients a
multidisciplinary and comprehensive health strategy, they are
dedicated to patient education and always emphasis prevention –
a philosophy that harnesses the natural human capacity to heal,
that recognizes the interconnectedness of the human body and
that minimizes the need to take harmful medications.
Take a moment for yourself. Imagine yourself in one, five, ten and
twenty years, and see yourself healthy and happy. Reflect on
what it will take for you to achieve this health potential.
