Pleasurology = Happiness = Well Being = Optimum Health
Written by Patrick Rhein
I find my greatest happiness in small pleasures.
Over the last decade, we have become more and more concerned by
the management of our stress, keeping our physical shape and
preventing problems related to our general state. In this quest
for well-being, we sometimes seek the miracle formula without
asking ourselves the essential question: am I enjoying myself?
Nevertheless, more and more research concludes that pleasure has
a positive effect on the psychological and physical well-being
of a person.
On the psychological level, physiological reactions resulting
from pleasure will result in a natural anti-depressant and
tranquilizing feeling in the form of a sense of well-being.
On the physical level, pleasure could be one of the conditions
favouring the healing of mild or more serious illnesses as well
as being a protective factor against illness.
Thinking about integrating enjoyment into ones daily life is
therefore a prime consideration.
What is Pleasure?
Pleasure is a feeling that results from the satisfaction of a
physical, emotional or intellectual need. It therefore differs
from one person to another. What has the potential to bring
enjoyment to one person does not necessarily have the same
effect on another. Some take pleasure in reading, music and
contact with nature or social activities. Others find more
enjoyment in physical activities, the challenge to learn, to
create, self-improvement, etc.
There is no specific list of activities to follow in order to
find pleasure. Contrary to what one might think, enjoyment is
not solely dependant on a particular context or external
elements. One can be involved in a wide variety of activities
that seem to be pleasant without necessarily enjoying them. On
the other hand, one may have an agenda full of responsibilities
and still enjoy assuming them.
Furthermore, the attitude that we have to life in general
strongly influences the presence of pleasure in our daily
affairs. The way we select and organize our activities, the
expectations that we develop vis-ΰ-vis our work and our personal
life, the way we interpret events, as well as the thinking that
we engage in, can be generators of pleasure or disappointment.
The Obstacles
All that one has retained during a lifetime and in our
experiences often influences our ability to feel or not to feel
pleasure. In this sense, education, social values, as well as a
lack of understanding of our needs are sometimes obstacles to
enjoyment.
Education received
As time goes on, we receive several messages. This leads us to
believe that pleasure is characteristic of and reserved for
certain situations, but it may not necessarily be present in our
daily lives. For example, think of the number of times you said
to yourself: there is a time for enjoyment and a time for
serious things.
Values and social pressures
The consumer society in which we live strongly incites us to
think that pleasure is linked to the acquisition of certain
goods or through the participation in certain activities.
Advertising, which attacks us from all sides, sometimes creates
false expectations or needs in us. This can trap us or prevent
us from taking advantage of what is already present and
accessible in our lives.
Misunderstanding our needs
In order to satisfy a need, one must first be capable of
properly recognizing it. In the hubbub of daily activities, it
is very easy to be all over the place and to end up not knowing
what one wants and what one needs.
How to Add Pleasure to One's Daily Activities
The ability to experience enjoyment does not develop through
magic. To develop or to add some satisfaction in daily
activities, one must first know what pleasure means for us and
to actively consider it as one of our priorities. The following
questions could be helpful in making oneself aware of the place
enjoyment has in our life.
What pleases you?
When is the last time you enjoyed yourself?
In what context, activity or state were you?
What effect did it have on you?
What do you foresee doing in your daily activities to recreate
this state?
What might this call for in a change of attitude on your part?
What could prevent you from doing it?
On which of these aspects do you have the power to act?
The necessary stages in the search for pleasure or enjoyment
are: to take the time to stop and identify our real needs, to
select the circumstances or choices able to fulfill them and to
take action.
What benefit will you be able to recognize instantly?
-
Your health and immune system are directly increased
-
Your sleep is improved
-
People are drawn to you
-
Lady luck shines on you
-
Your business and results increase exponentially
-
Your personal life blossoms
-
Your creativity is expressed magnificently
-
Your sexuality sky rockets
-
Etc..
One can confirm that pleasure is healthy, generates good health and
is a multiplier of happiness.
Pleasure is a reason which motivates us into action.
Pleasure = Reason+ Action
Reason + Action= Motivation
Live your life with passion!
