Feng Shui and Seasons of Change

The
crisp scent of autumn air and the rustle of falling leaves
whisper of the coming winter. These sensations lead us into
thoughts of creating a warm, comfortable nest for the dark
winter months ahead. The study of Feng Shui may seem a distant
connection to this process but when you consider that its
theories are based on the observation of nature over thousands
of years, the repeating patterns of changing seasons begin to
make sense in an entirely new way.
One
of the most often quoted “rules” of Feng Shui is to clear away
clutter in your surroundings. Nature accomplishes this process
with the falling of leaves and the slowing of growth. Plants
become dormant and draw inward to focus on concentrating energy
for renewed growth in the spring. Animals that live in the wild
will find or build homes to shelter them over the coming season
and they collect food for winter survival. Excluding the past
200 years or so, people repeated this same pattern on a large
scale to ensure their survival in our harsh Canadian climate.
Today, we have “conquered” some aspects of life with central
heating, well insulated homes and year round accessibility to
fresh foods. However, we are still instinctive creatures and as
such we have not lived with this change long enough to alter our
deep seated need to “nest” and to prepare for winter.

As the world around us follows its ancient rhythm notice how
you feel the urge to clean out the flower beds, bundle into
warmer clothes, cook heartier meals and concentrate on more
indoor activities. Many people find this the perfect time
of year to clear out the basement, straighten up the garage
and dispose of items you no longer use. In whatever form
you choose to do it, clearing clutter is a physical and a
symbolic way of preparing your living space for new
experiences. This may be as small a job as cleaning out the
junk drawer in the kitchen, or as large as clearing out the
basement and making a donation to charity of the furniture
and old board games you haven’t used in years. |
"We all need new experiences in life to keep us active
and growing"...

We
all need new experiences in life to keep us active and growing.
If your life seems “stuck” and opportunities just don’t seem to
be falling in your lap, remember that you need to plan for
change. You also need to make room for it. If your home or
office is full of “stuff” you never use or if you can’t remember
the color of the carpet under all those magazines, it is time to
do something about it. It is time to move out the old and
invite in the new. Go ahead and “boldly throw what no one has
dared throw before” then, wait and see if the reward is even
more than you may have expected!
